When I create any memory keeping project, whether it’s a scrapbook page, a journal, or a mini album, the photos and the memories they hold always take centre stage.
These precious photos were taken by my dad when I was a newborn. At the time, fathers were not allowed inside the maternity ward, so he had to take the photos through the hospital window. That small detail makes these photos even more meaningful to preserve.
My mom also kept the name card that was attached to my crib, another tiny but important piece of the story.
Creating this scrapbook page allowed me to bring these memories together and honour the love and care that surrounded those first moments of my life.
In this scrapbook layout you’ll see how patterned paper, inks and simple embellishments can be used to create a soft vintage page that lets the photographs remain the focus.

Method:
To begin the page, I selected FabScraps patterned paper and a sentiment that perfectly suited the vintage nature of the photos.

To create the background for the layout, I used two different patterned papers. Instead of dividing one sheet in half to place in the middle of the other, I cut both papers into two pieces: one piece measuring roughly 10 cm × 30 cm (4″ × 12″) and the other roughly 20 cm × 30 cm (8″ × 12″).

The floral patterned paper was then given scalloped edges on the outer sides to add visual interest. I traced the scallop pattern using a scalloped ruler and carefully cut the shape out with scissors.

The background pages were then recreated by adhering the two pieces of each patterned paper back together, forming the layered background seen in the completed layout.
I struggled to find the right colour of plain cardstock and flowers to match the patterned paper, so I turned to my inks to customise the elements for the layout.
The cardstock used for the photo mats was created by colouring smooth lilac cardstock with Victorian Velvet Distress Ink. I blended the ink onto the cardstock using a blending tool, working from a Teflon craft sheet, until the colour matched the palette of the page perfectly.

The flowers and paper doilies were also tinted to coordinate with the layout. I used the Dip Technique, combining different water-based inks including Artistry Ink (Lavender Dash), Distress Ink (Victorian Velvet) and Perfect Pearls Mist (Interference Red and Perfect Pearl) to create soft variations in colour.

To soften the look of the photographs, the corners of the photos and some of the photo mats were rounded using a corner rounder paper punch. The edges of the long strip photo mat were given a decorative edge using a decorative rotary blade cutter.

The scalloped edges of the floral patterned paper were inked as well, which helped soften the page and enhance the vintage feel.
The pages were finished with pearls in a matching colour to add a delicate final touch.
This layout is a reminder that memory keeping is truly an act of love. Taking the time to preserve these stories, details and moments ensures they are never lost.
