Did you know you can colour ric-rac?
Sometimes it’s impossible to find the exact trim colour you need for a project. Instead of hunting for the perfect shade, you can easily customise plain ric-rac using inks you already have in your stash.
This simple technique lets you create the exact colour you need to match your project perfectly.
In this technique you’ll see how liquid inks or ink pad inks can be used to colour fabric trims like ric-rac, giving you complete control over the colour palette of your project.

Technique:
1. To colour ric-rac with ink you will need a water-based ink.
2. For this example I used All Purpose Ink (Forest) from Tsukineko, which is a liquid ink and therefore very easy to apply directly to fabric trims like ric-rac.

3. You can also use ink pad inks. Simply press some ink onto a craft sheet and add a little water to activate it. Then press the ric-rac into the wet ink.

4. If you are using All Purpose Ink, place the ric-rac either on a craft sheet or in a small container and add a few drops of ink directly onto the trim.

5. Work the ink into the ric-rac until it is evenly coloured.

6. You may want to wear gloves for this step, as the ink can colour your hands as well!
7. Allow the ric-rac to dry completely and your custom coloured trim is ready to use.

This same technique can also be used to colour other fabric embellishments such as:
- lace
- seam binding
- cotton ribbon
It’s a wonderful way to customise trims so they match your project perfectly.
