How to build a splatter box

A splatter box is one of those tools that quickly becomes indispensable once you start working with ink and paint splats. It helps contain the mess while still allowing you the freedom to play and experiment.
This easy homemade splatter box can be made from packaging you already have at home, and it’s fully customisable to suit your projects.

Method:
To create this simple splatter box, start with an old packaging box that has a hinged lid.

Make sure the box is the right size for your needs. I used a box that scrapbooking paper was shipped in, measuring approximately 35 cm × 35 cm. This size comfortably fits a standard 30 cm × 30 cm (12″ × 12″) scrapbook page, but your box can be larger or smaller depending on what you usually create.
You will also need two additional pieces of sturdy packaging cardstock

and a small piece of self-adhesive Velcro.

Check that the two extra pieces of cardstock fit neatly inside your box to form the side walls.

Stick two pieces of Velcro to the inside of the box lid.

Keep both sides of the Velcro attached to the lid and peel away the protective backing to expose the adhesive.
Position one piece of cardstock against the sticky Velcro to form a removable side panel.

Press it down firmly so it adheres well.
Repeat the process on the opposite side using the second piece of cardstock.
You now have a simple but very effective splatter box with removable sides, perfect for containing splats while you work.

Using your Splatter Box
Place your project inside the box with the extra side panels attached and create your splats with confidence.

When you’re done, simply remove the side panels to store the box closed.
This tool works beautifully for ink splats, paint splats, and other messy techniques.
We recommend that you use an apron while creating splats as the front edge will not be as high as the rest of the sides.
